The Diocesan School of Ministry and Theology began in l964 as the Huston School of Theology with 15 men meeting at St. Mark's Cathedral. Since that time, the School has grown, embracing a more diverse population within the Diocese and expanding the approach to ministry.

In 2001 Dean Michael Wyatt accepted a call to the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., and we are currently in an interim period as a new Dean is sought. During this time we do not intend to change the focus of the Cycle of Studies, or of the Licensed Ministries training. We continue to affirm the direction of the School and support the five year goals which we articulated at our most recent retreat, in the spring of 2001. These goals (which follow) are intended to support and further the Diocesan growth initiative:

  • We are committed to exploring ways to increase accessibility to the School
in the Diocese by establishing other locations, by developing curricula that
can be shared locally, and by other methods.
  • We are committed to developing trainings for the canonically licensed lay ministries.
  • We are committed to fostering partnerships with Commissions and other groups in our Diocese.
  • We are committed to working on post-baptismal formation throughout our Diocese, as well as finding ways to support evangelism and catechumenal formation.
  • We are committed to review and revise our curriculum, and to provide clear guidelines for its development, so that our offerings throughout the Diocese will be integrated and coherent.

It is in this spirit that we commit ourselves to The School's continuing ministry in the Diocese and look forward to the years to come.

The Diocesan School of Ministry and Theology has primary responsibility for adult formation as part of the Faith Formation Commission of the Diocese of Olympia.
