Lenten Series -- Wednesdays, 7:30 PM, Wilson Hall. Rip Van Winkle
will be speaking on "Third Isaiah" at the Wednesday Evening
Lenten series. He is currently a prison chaplain at Monroe; he was an
Old Testament faculty member at Seattle Pacific. He is an engaging and
knowledgeable speaker. "Third Isaiah" -- What relevance does
Third Isaiah (Isaiah 56-66) have for the modern church? Do you ever feel
disappointed with God's promises? Has God failed to meet your
expectations? What does faithful obedience look like? Is God's community
based on ethnicity and religious ritual? If not, what defines the
community of God? Come listen as Third Isaiah (Isaiah 56-66) provides
answers to these questions. Deutero-Isaiah (Isaiah 40-55) promised
deliverance from captivity in Babylon and a wonderful future. Third
Isaiah (Isaiah 56-66) reiterates Deutero-Isaiah's promises. Israel
complains of the Lord's unfaithfulness since God did not fulfill the
promises. Third Isaiah confronts their complaints by insisting that the
promises were conditional. They were based on faithful obedience.
Finally, Third-Isaiah envisages a community defined by faithful
righteousness instead of one based on ethnicity and ritual purity.
