standing committee

The Standing Committee serves as a council of advice for the Bishop concerning decisions related to the sale, encumbrance or disposal of real property in the diocese, and other matters at the discretion of the Bishop. They also interview candidates for ordination; the consent of the Standing Committee is required before someone can be ordained to the diaconate and/or priesthood. Other responsibilities include giving/withholding consent to election of bishops throughout the Church, and judicial responsibilities in the case of clergy misconduct where the clergy or the complainant does not accept the adjudication of the Bishop.

The Standing Committee is made up of 8 members - 4 clergy, 4 lay persons - each of whom serve a four-year term. One clergy and one lay person is elected at Diocesan Convention each year. A congregation may not have more than one member serving on the Standing Committee at any given time. Officers of the Standing Committee – President, Secretary, Chaplain and Representative on the Commission on Ministry – are elected annually, usually at the first Standing Committee meeting following Diocesan Convention.

student scholarship committee

Because the need for financial support continues to escalate as the cost of training for Holy Orders grows, the Student Scholarship Committee was formed in 2002. Its goal is to assist all individuals seeking ordination, both deacons and priests.
Over $4,000 has been donated as a result of a broad appeal made in the January 2003 issue of Voice, information distributed at Convention and through the FYI. Donors may either designate their gifts or direct them to one of the endowment funds to build the principle.

sudanese ministry

A working committee consisting of representatives from the Sudanese community, lay people and clergy has been established. Much time and effort have been spent laying the foundation for this ministry. It is hoped that a strong relationship will be developed with St. Mark’s Cathedral.
